Hopefully not as bad as a chain letter

I'm stumped for something to write about. So, I'm falling back on a meme. I think these memes are a bit overdone on blogs, but I like this one and it's about books and I'm a librarian:

What 5 books are you vaguely embarassed to admit you haven't read? (via this blog via this one via lisnews)

(I'm taking liberties on exactly how many I'm listing?)

1. Capital by Karl Marx

2. The books that I should have read (since I graded student papers about them) but didn't when I was a graduate TA for a sociology of education class: Preparing for Power by Cookson and Persell and The Dreamkeepers by Gloria Ladson Billings.

3. The books I should have read for my various undergraduate and graduate classes but didn't even though I wrote papers about them.

4. Both The Managed Heart and The Second Shift by Arlie Hochschild since I have referred to them in conversation and writing as though I've read them.

5. All those classics of Russian and English literature that are too numerous to list but are exemplified by this, this, this, and this.

In addition, there are books that I simply refuse to read out of principle. This is my twist on the meme:

What books do you refuse to be even slightly embarassed about admitting you haven't read?

1. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown: Ahhh, the hype, the hype, I hate to read things that have so much buzz...and it's a religious-y topic which doesn't interest me.

2. The Left Behind Series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins: See above.

3. That damn Dune Chronicles series by Frank Herbert et al: See previous blog post from 4-08-04.

4. The Bible: NT or OT, it's all the same to me.

What about you? What books would be on your list(s)? Please comment.
