In view of Sister's "I will vomit" link over to the right, I just wanted to remark that my politics are very different from hers, but in a way you might not expect.
In my opinion, there is ONE major difference between Democrats and Republicans: Democrats want the government to forcibly take total control of every human activity that our technology allows it to, then hand that control over to their corporate masters. Republicans, on the other hand, prefer to wait for the people to foolishly SELL themselves to those same corporate masters -- slower, but it cuts out the middleman.
There is also ONE difference between a government and an organized crime ring: better marketing.
The best possible outcome for this election would be if the losing camp got so angry about the result that they immediately rose up in open revolution. We'd end up with either two (or more) separate nations, free to go their own ways, or we'd end up with one nation from which all the dissenters had been purged. Either way, it would be an improvement over what we have now -- two (or more) mutually-hostile cultures forced together like angry tomcats in a sack, tricked into believing that they're fighting their opponents while they're all actually working to enrich a small group of elites.
Thomas Jefferson was right when he said "the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants". Periodic revolution is essential for the maintenance of anything resembling a free society, but we've lost the necessary will to stage one. Soon, thanks to modern technology's creation of a society where total surveillance and total control of credit are feasible, we will lose the opportunity and ability to stage a revolution.
Do we worry about the long-term preservation of personal freedom, economic efficiency, basic human rights, or anything else of importance? No, we're too busy worrying about which candidate is the blackest or which one will best prevent gays from buying each other diamond rings... that is, when we're not worrying about who's going to get kicked off "Dancing with the Stars".
I really don't know who to hate more... the small elite of power-hungry bastards or the great mass of gullible fools. Sister thinks she's going to vomit if Sarah Palin gets to go to foreign dignitaries' funerals for four years? I vomit (figuratively speaking) EVERY DAMN DAY, I have since about 1985, and I expect to continue doing so until I finally accumulate enough trans-fats in my arteries to kill me stone dead.
THOSE are my politics.
